I had never heard of Quebec City before we made a one night stop there on our long road trip from Chicago to Prince Edward Island. But once there, I wished we could stay for several days.
Quebec City, especially the old part of town, made me feel like I had been transported to Europe. However, it still felt distinctly Canadian. Our one night stop gave us just enough time to walk the cobblestoned streets, get drenched in a random downpour, try poutine, attempt to photograph a rainbow over the Saint Lawrence River, and feel woefully confused at everything being in French.
First time trying poutine (a delightful concoction of chips, gravy, and cheese curds). Verdict: Yum.
For all its brevity, our visit to Quebec City stands out as one of my favorite stops on the road trip. Maybe it was the impossibly narrow streets filled with music in the evening, maybe it was the good food, probably it was the architecture.
I would like to point out that I was wearing a much cuter outfit before the rain spoiled it and I had to change. Freaking rain.
That night I sat in my bed at the Auberge Internationale (a wonderfully clean and friendly hostel with a great location in Old Quebec) and watched the lights of the city down below as the rain clouds swept by. I hope I get to return to Quebec City one day, but if I don’t then I am glad I at least got a taste of it.
